A Fire Alarm? At 5:30 AM?

On the first morning of our trip to LUMCON this past weekend, we were awoken by a 5:30 am fire alarm, which wasn't great. However, since high tide had rolled in, I was able to play a game of biology I Spy with the students and we saw blue crabs, a ctenophore, and some juvenile fishes swimming around the parking lot at LUMCON. After the early morning wake up call, we had an amazing two days of hands-on, place-based marine science with water quality sampling, biodiversity analysis, and fishing. Our group of 34 enjoyed seeing everything that the Louisiana marshes had to offer and my group had a great time on the water, catching a cownose ray, a spotted seatrout, and a lizardfish. We bird watched on our way to our fishing sites, and our amazing educator Josie and I talked about the ways that the Louisiana people and its government are working to try and rebuild the land faster than it is being washed away. In the evening, I took a small group out to the docks for a sunset walk and the sky was filled with beautiful colors and no clouds. We got to see some shore birds and crabs along the marsh edge as we took in the sunset.

Not much more to report on, so I will let this slideshow tell the rest of the story. Stay tuned for more adventures in next week's blog.
